The challenge presented by Bloomberg Philanthropies –a philanthropic organisation that centres its resources on environmental, public health, art, public innovation and education issues– had the objective of identifying, scaling, and replicating innovative solutions created by city halls for their own communities in response to the impact of Covid-19.
Through a network of mentors and experts in public innovation, Unit accompanied 134 Latin American city halls in identifying their challenges for recovery. To do this, it worked closely with 10 cities on strengthening their proposals for making improvements within their territories. These prototypes were put to the test to identify the critical points in each system, as well as operational, articulation, and management requirements for each project to be implemented with success.
This project mobilised over 550 public servants and different teams trained in design-based innovation for the development of prototypes. Two of the cities that Unit assisted ended up winning the contest, receiving USD$1 million each to implement their ideas.
