Global Mayors Challenge: Cities innovation for post-pandemic recovery

Challenge:

To support 133 municipalities in Latin America and the Caribbean to work on their ideas for citizen services under an innovation and design approach.

What we did:

Unit is a delivery partner of Bloomberg Philanthropies in the context of the Global Mayors Challenge 2021, a global competition that seeks to identify, scale, and replicate innovative solutions for post-pandemic recovery at the local level.

Through a network of expert mentors in public innovation, Unit accompanied 134 councils in Latin America to identify their post-Covid recovery challenges. In particular, the ten cities selected from the first stage of the competition were asked to strengthen their innovation proposals for the improvement of their territories in conjunction with citizens. Two cities accompanied by Unit were the winners of the competition, receiving one million USD to implement their idea.

Results:

  • 133 municipalities in Latin America with a trained innovation team and 550 employees mobilised.
  • Ten municipalities in Latin America with ten solution prototypes in public services to face the pandemic.
  • Two cities accompanied by Unit were the winners of the contest, receiving one million USD to implement their idea.
