This gathering space for neighbours allows for different members of the community to engage with other actors of the public and private world, as well as with their own surroundings, in a creative and collaborative way. For this purpose, the space has a digital fabrication laboratory, auditoriums, and work spaces, all of which are open to accommodating and supporting the community’s initiatives.
Applying Unit’s public design model –which incorporates strategic design and collaborative work methodologies–, a new public innovation institutionality was created in order to elaborate the La Fabrica project. For this innovation process, polls were held, along with investigation and co-creation workshops which had 85 participants from various sectors: both municipal and community teams, as well as representatives from the academic world, the private sector, civil society, and public innovation.
La Fabrica was designed and built collaboratively along with 85 relevant actors from the public and private world.
The La Fabrica strategy, which gives vision and structure to institutionality, represents an example of public value generation at a local level through a collaborative innovation process. “La Fabrica sheds light on the democratisation of innovation, since it offers the possibility of moving its gravitational centre to a territory that is characterised for its economic and social vulnerability.” Gabriela Elgueta, Director of La Fabrica. The objective is to generate the city hall’s economical and social transformation, focusing on the sustainable development of opportunities through cooperation between public-private spheres and Renca residents.
Towards the end of April 2021, this project became the only public service to receive an award for the Sustentabilidad de Pulso Hub under the category “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure” at the 2020 Sustainable Initiatives Awards.
