This challenge, launched by Bloomberg Philanthropies—a philanthropic organization focused on the environment, public health, the arts, public innovation, and education—sought to identify and support solutions designed by cities, for their communities, in response to the impacts of COVID-19.

Through a network of expert mentors in public innovation, Unit supported 133 municipalities across Latin America in identifying their key recovery challenges. It worked closely with 10 selected cities to strengthen and refine their proposals aimed at improving their local contexts. These prototypes were tested to identify critical points in each system and the operational, coordination, and management needs for successful implementation.

The initiative mobilized over 550 public servants and various municipal teams trained in design-driven innovation for the development of these prototypes. As a result, two of the cities supported by Unit were awarded in the final selection, each receiving USD 1 million to implement their ideas.
